Information on Rabbits
Rabbits are a common and often popular sight around both urban and rural areas, however rabbits can quickly become a burden to domestic and commercial properties.
The wild rabbit is easily identified by its greyish brown fur, fluffy white tail and long ears. Rabbits breed all year round and can have up to 6 litters of kits a year! It is for this reason that they can quickly populate an area and cause significant damage. Although rabbits are heavily predated by foxes, birds of prey, stoats, weasels and badgers, their population keeps growing.
In rural areas rabbits can cause a significant amount of damage to arable crops, game cover crops, woodland due to their feeding and burrowing behaviours. Burrowing also causes problems for livery yards, riding schools and livestock pens, as their burrows can cause broken limbs and could potentially be fatal for some animals. All of these factors can be very stressful, costly and even upsetting to rural properties and industries.
