Information on Moles

The European or Garden mole is native to the UK and they are the only pest that has not been introduced to the wild by humans. Moles have a pointed snout, very large, rounded front feet with claws and a short bare tail. Their eyes appear very small, due to living under ground for the majority of their life. There is a common misconception that moles are blind, this is not true! A mole has strong smell and taste which it will use for the majority of the time, however they can see and are able to use this when needed. They typically grow to between 11 – 15cm long with a velvety brown fur, their fur is very interesting as it is non-directional, this is to allow them to manoeuvre through their tight tunnels easily.

Moles have adapted to be very effective digger, their shovel-like feet allow them to tunnel up to 18 feet an hour! They tend to prefer moist earth for tunnelling, which means that watering your lawn too much could be creating the perfect conditions for moles.

Moles are insectivores and contrary to popular belief, they are not of the rodent family. Moles will mainly prey on insects and grubs, with around 80% of their diet consisting of earthworms. Moles can eat nearly their own body weight in earthworms daily!

Moles tend to be more solitary animals, for example, over one acre of land, there may only be 3 – 5 moles and this would be considered a high number of moles. That being said, they are notorious for causing excessive damage to manicured lawns, arable land/crops, livestock/equestrian premises, sports clubs, golf courses and domestic properties.

  • ALWAYS control a mole outbreak as quickly as possible – due to their effective digging, it could be increasingly more difficult to treat, the longer it is left.
  • NEVER attempt to treat a mole infestation with over the counter products – without knowledge of mole behaviour and management practices, it could cause unnecessary suffering to the animal and could potentially make treatment harder.
  • ALWAYS seek professional advice as soon as possible
  • NEVER attempt to block holes or tunnels – this could make the problem worse
