Information on Fleas
Fleas, the parasite that has tormented people and their pets for hundreds of years. Fleas were the main distributor and catalyst of the Bubonic Plague or ‘Black Death’ that blanketed the UK back in the late middle ages (1340 – 1400). Nowadays, the Bubonic plague is not a risk in the UK, but in some parts of the world, such as Africa, it is still killing people.
Fleas are very small, wingless insects which are parasitic (which means they feed on the blood of a live host). They are supremely designed to survive, for instance, a flea can survive for up to 155 days with a blood meal! They have the ability (when needed) to enter a hibernation type phase, by slowing down their metabolic activity until a new food source becomes available. They can detect a new host through vibrations, this is why a house left empty whilst the occupants are on holiday may quickly become riddled with fleas upon returning. Fleas have the ability to jump vertically up to 7 inches! That is the equivalent of a human jumping the height of two double decker buses!
