Information on Ants

There are many ant species found in the UK with the majority of these living outside of your property, setting up colonies almost anywhere including the roots of plants/trees, in lawns or flowerbeds and under stones or paving.

Ant colonies outside of your property are unlikely to interfere with you too much, however ant colonies that are found in the fabric of the building, in areas such as window frames, cavity walls and heating/electrical ducting, can have a great impact on your property. If food or water is found by the ants inside your property, they will encourage others to join them using a pheromone scent trail and once established, this may become a regularly used route.

Pharaoh ants and some other species are only found indoors in the UK, as they are reliant on a warm and humid environment all year round. Pharaoh ants are smaller in size than the more common black or red ants, at around 1 – 2mm in length, and the are a pale yellow brown colour.

It is essential that correct identification of the species is undertaken. This is particularly relevant when considering the eradication of the tropical species. Different species have different colony and caste systems. Some have multiple queens and are effective at rebuilding scattered colonies quickly. If a home treatment is used before proper identification is carried out, you may exacerbate the situation and create multiple colonies.

It is the worker ants that usually cause problems for humans whilst they forage for food, water or nesting materials, but between July and September some ants develop wings and fly in large numbers, invading homes and gardens in their quest for food or a place to establish a new colony. These swarms normally only last for 2-3 hours before the male ants die off and the females shed their wings, before burrowing into the soil where they remain during the winter.

Ants moving around in your home will most likely be foraging for food, especially sweet and sticky substances. It is recommended that all food items are stored away in containers with a lid and any spilt food is cleared away regularly, ensuring that you pay close attention to hard to reach areas such as under cookers and white goods appliances. Pet food is also likely to attract ants, so clearing away any leftover food after feeding time is advised.

Do you have an ant problem?

If you believe that you may have an ant infestation, there are some facts that you may want to consider:

  • NEVER attempt to treat an ant colony yourself – this could result in the colony budding and the infestation becoming more aggressive
  • ALWAYS disinfect any areas that you have seen ants moving – this can remove the pheromone scent trail

  • Restrict all food sources including pet food
