Information on Silverfish

Silverfish, also known as the fishmoth, are common in the UK, yet many people may have never seen or heard of them before. Silverfish will often inhabit dark, damp areas of domestic and commercial properties, common locations are bathrooms, kitchens, cellars and loft spaces.

Silverfish are wingless insects that have a silvery-blue or grey appearance along its tapered tail-like body and two long, slender antennae. Adult silverfish will reach up to 10 – 12mm in length. Silverfish were given their name due to the way in which they move, they will often wriggle their whole body just like a fish.

Silverfish reproduction is variable across species, some will lay a small amount of eggs daily, whereas, others may lay up to 20 daily! Silverfish eggs will often be laid in hard to reach areas such as cracks and crevices, these can prove very difficult to find.

Although silverfish appear to be harmless, their feeding habits and behaviours can potentially cause significant damage to domestic and commercial premises. Silverfish do prefer carbohydrates such as sugars and starches, however they will also devour parts of items such as wallpapers, books, photographs, plaster and fabrics, amongst other items. If left untreated, silverfish populations can rapidly become out of control. We do not recommend the use of over the counter products to attempt to fight the infestation, these are rarely strong enough to remove silverfish and as a result, it could make the problem more aggressive. Silverfish do not pose a significant health threat to humans or pets.

  • DO NOT attempt to treat silverfish with over the counter products – these are often too weak and could result in the infestation becoming more aggressive
  • ALWAYS attempt to reduce the humidity within the property – this can be done by leaving windows open or through the use of dehumidifying device
  • Regularly throw away any newspapers, magazines and other reading materials that are no longer in use – this will reduce potential food sources
  • Ensure property is regularly cleaned, vacuumed and disinfected – this will further reduce potential food sources
