Information on Flies

There are many fly species in the UK, however the 5 most common flies that inhabit domestic and commercial premises are:

  • Filter Fly – The filter fly is one of the smaller flies in the UK, usually measuring between 1 – 2mm in length. They have a tan coloured body that may appear grey, they also have wings that are densely covered in hairs. Filter fly populations are on the increase in the UK, their preferred habitat is moist or humid areas. Some likely causes to a filter fly outbreak are compost or ordinary bins, stagnant water inside properties ( such as leaks), sewage and humid rooms.
  • Fruit Fly – The fruit fly is often between 2 -3mm in length with yellow-brown or mottled colours. They also have bright red eyes that often stand out. In flight, the fruit flies abdomen hangs down and they are often seen to hover. As the name suggests, fruit flies are normally associated with fruit, often the fermenting variety. Fruit flies will also be attracted to sugary foods and drinks such as ice creams and beer, for this reason, they are a particular nuisance to public houses.
  • Cluster Fly – The cluster fly is usually between 6 – 10mm in length with a dark grey thorax (front part of the body) covered with golden brown hairs. When a cluster fly is at rest, their wings will often overlap and they can appear sluggish in flight. Cluster fly often hibernate through autumn and winter, before emerging again in early spring. They are frequently found hibernating in warm attic spaces or cavity walls. Cluster fly are not associated with organic waste, as they lay their eggs in earthworm colonies.
  • House Fly – The house fly is often between 5 – 8mm in length with a grey thorax which also has four narrow stripes running down it. They also have a buff or yellow abdomen, which is covered in small hairs, these are the fly’s taste organs. House flies have very complex compound eyes that are made up of thousands of lenses, this gives them a very wide field of view. House flies are major carriers of disease and can infest all kinds of domestic and commercial premises. They are attracted to lots of food sources such as human food, pet food and organic waste (fruit, vegetables, meat and even faeces!).
  • Bluebottle Fly – The bluebottle fly is probably the most recognised fly species in domestic and commercial properties. They are often between 6 – 12mm in length, with a metallic blue colour to their body. Bluebottle flies are also known as blowfly. Blue bottle flies are commonly scavengers that are associated with rotting organic matter such as vegetables/fruit, faeces and animal carcasses. It is for this reason, that they pose such a health risk to both domestic and commercial premises.

  • ALWAYS clean and disinfect any surface that you have seen a fly on
  • ALWAYS restrict access to food – clear all debris immediately including pet food and store in plastic containers (where possible)
  • Over the counter fly sprays may be used as a short term control of adult flies – this will not kill larvae or eggs

  • Store all compost and regular bins as far as possible from doors and windows
