Information on Ladybirds
Ladybirds are probably the last insect to cross your mind when you think of pests, however to anyone who has had a problem with ladybirds, it could be a nightmare!
The Harlequin ladybird is a non-native invader that is believed to have landed on the shores of the UK in 2004, originating from Asia. They have since spread rapidly across the whole of the UK. So what is so harmful about the Harlequin ladybird?
Most non-native invasive species have a detremental effect of the UK wildlife, often changing ecosystems in a very short space of time and out competing their rivals. The Harlequin ladybird is a cannibalistic species and it is directly related to the decline of at least seven native ladybird species. As a result, this has a knock on effect to native wild song bird populations, that rely on ladybirds for food. Overall, all non-native species in the UK are estimated to cost the economy £1.7 billion each year!
Harlequin ladybirds can be tricky to identify, they are quite large, usually 6 – 8mm in length. They have red-brown legs and a dome shaped back. Their colouration varies vastly but many are orange with around 16 black black spots and a prominent white ‘false eye’ marking at the front of its back.
