Deer Management Information

There are six deer species present in the UK, these are listed in size order:

  • Muntjac Deer (Muntiacus reevesi)
  • Chinese Water Deer (Hydropotes inermis)
  • Roe Deer (Capreolus capreolus)
  • Sika Deer (Cervus nippon)
  • Fallow Deer (Dama dama)
  • Red Deer (Cervus elaphus)

Deer populations in the UK are on the rise due to a number of factors. In the UK, there is a lack of natural predation for deer, this is due to the wild wolves and bears being hunted to the point of extinction in the UK. With no natural predators the deer are free to breed unchecked, this can have detrimental effects on the health of the herd and could lead to a total collapse of the population in an area.

Higher deer populations also lead to more crop and tree damage on agricultural land, as deer consume tree saplings, they can permanently kill the tree. Deer will also consume large quantities of crops daily, especially if they are herding deer. Couching or lying in crops can also cause irreversible damage, costing farmers a significant amount of money.

Road Traffic Collisions involving deer are also on the rise, especially in more rural areas. This is linked with the population growth of deer as a whole and has the possibility to be life threating to both the deer and the people involved. Our technicians volunteer to be on the deer call out register, this means that if a deer is involved in a Road Traffic Collison and is injured, our technicians are on hand 24/7 to offer assistance to police at the scene. Sometimes they decide that it may be nicer for the animal to humanely dispatch it, this is really upsetting to us as deer are our passion and there is nothing we love more than to see them in a sustainable habitat.

Do you have a deer problem?

If you feel you may have a deer problem, please read the following carefully:

  • Try to log damage – approximate date, area and time, if possible
  • NEVER attempt to approach or move on deer – this could provoke a buck/stag

Urban Jungle has a team of highly trained (to BDS standards) and experienced deer managers based in London and Kent, who can offer a bespoke management plan and then implement it. As all ground and needs are different, our deer management team will assess your population and create a management plan to keep this population at a sustainable level whilst keeping their impact to trees and crops to a minimum.

The Urban Jungle deer management team has been trained to a high level and have over 10 years deer management experience. Do not be caught out by companies imitating this! Always ask to see their deer stalking certificate provided by the British Deer Society!
