Information on Moths

TThere are many species of moths in the UK (approximately 2500 species), the most common of which are the clothes and carpet moths. Commonly, moths are most destructive to domestic and commercial premises, in their larval stage. Moth larvae recurrently feed on Keratin, a fibrous structural protein found in materials such as wool, feathers, hair and nails. A female can lay between 30 – 200 eggs at a time and these eggs will complete their full life cycle in approximately 30 days. It is for this reason, that substantial damage can be caused in a very short amount of time!

Most moths are attracted to light sources and dirty clothing or carpet. Frequently, an infestation may go unnoticed for a long time, this is because they may target hard to access areas without direct sunlight such as under wardrobes, in airing cupboards and under beds.

As thicker pile carpets are more commonly used nowadays, it may take a long time to notice any damage as they will often eat from the base layer, up. Damage will appear as the carpet pile slowly thins, so you may see the thinning or even bare patches on your carpet.

An influx of adult moths can be an indicator that there may be larvae hidden around your property. Make sure to check carpets, clothes, cashmere products and leather items regularly for signs of damage. As with most pests, the quicker the infestation is identified, the less damage caused and the easier it will be to treat. Moths do not pose any health risks to humans or pets.

Do you have a moth problem?

If you think you may have a moth problem in your domestic or commercial property, please read the following carefully:

  • NEVERattempt to treat moth larvae with over the counter products, this will cause the problem to bud and spread – Over the counter sprays may be effective on adult moths but will not eradicate the infestation
  • Regularly inspect hard to reach areas of carpet – Under cupboards/wardrobes, under beds, in airing cupboards and spare rooms
  • Regularly inspect clothing made of natural materials – Especially clothes that have not been worn for a while
