Information on Rats

Rats! the name that brings a shiver down many peoples spines. To people that have/had rats in their property at some stage, they can be the source of fear, damage and stress.

The most common rat to enter domestic and commercial premises in the UK is the Norwegian rat, also known as the brown rat. An adult brown rat can be up to 40cm in length and commonly weighs between 350 – 500g. Generally, their tail is shorter than their head and body combined. They have a blunt nose, small ears and a thicker body than their cousins, the ship rat also known as the black rat.

Brown rats prefer close to ground level as they are not very good at climbing. It is however, not uncommon to have brown rats in a loft space. Rats spend a lot of time in and around sewers and refuge facilities, as result they have the potential to be carrying a multitude of diseases that are harmful to humans and pets. Rat nests are often found around the external areas of properties, with some of the more common locations being refuge areas, loose soil/mounds, under sheds, in wall cavities and inside earthy banks. The most frequent way that rats will enter both domestic and commercial properties, is related to a drain defect, this will allow rats to get under the foundations and move around the whole property freely.

Rats are very prolific animals and they can become sexually active after just three months! A female rat can produce between 3 – 12 litters per year, with each litter containing on average 6 – 8 young. A young rat will begin searching for solid food at the age of 2 – 3 weeks! Rats are omnivorous animals, this means that they will eat both vegetables and meat.

All rodents (mice, rats and squirrels) have constantly growing incisors, as a result they have to ‘gnaw’ regularly to keep these at a reasonable length. It is this gnawing behaviour that can cause significant structural and electrical damage within both domestic and commercial properties.

  • DO NOT attempt to treat rats with over the counter products without seeking professional advice – This can be costly and could make the infestation worse
  • ALWAYS store food products up high, where possible, in plastic containers – this includes any pet foods
  • ALWAYS threw away any items you feel may have come into contact with rats – due to the diseases that rats can transmit, it is not worth risking
  • DO NOT over feed wild birds with a feeder – The excess can draw rats to the area
  • Ensure that you clean and disinfect surfaces regularly
