Information on Wasps

We have all been at a barbecue or picnic at some stage, where the experience has been somewhat tainted by the sudden arrival of wasps or hornets. Wasps and hornets are loathed by many people across the UK, but how much do we really know about these pesky insects? surprisingly, very little! There hasn’t been much research into impact and benefits of wasps or hornets, although it is believed that like bees, they may actually be efficient pollinators.

In the UK, there are plethora of wasp species however, the most frequently seen are the common or German wasps and hornets. Hornets have had a lot of media coverage in the last few years, this is due to outbreaks of the invasive Asian hornets, these are larger than the native European hornet and are believed to have caused deaths in France and Britain. They are also notorious for targeting the native honeybee’s nests and decimating them within a matter of hours!

Often the wasps seen flying around outside of the nest are females or ‘workers’ and in hornet colonies, these may be referred to as ‘scouts’. wasps are typically 10 – 30cm in length with distinct yellow and black striped abdomens, hornets are often larger than this with similar markings. Wasps and hornets will often establish nests in loft spaces, eaves, soffits, air bricks, cavity walls, garages, sheds, trees/bushes and even underground.

Wasps and hornets are infamous are for stinging humans, however for most of the summer they wont, unless provoked. To some a sting could be life threatening, these stings can promote the release of Histamine from the body of an allergic individual, which if untreated, can lead to the body going into Anaphylactic shock
