Information on Bedbugs

Everybody knows of the saying “Sleep tight, don’t let the bedbugs bite!”, unfortunately for some this may be all too true. Bedbug infestations are on the rise and they can invade your property through a multitude of methods, however, it is imperative to contain the infestation as early as possible. Failure to do so can lead to further spreading throughout your home! Any property is susceptible to bedbugs, no matter how clean it is, they are attracted to exhaled Carbon Dioxide and body heat rather than dirt. Bedrooms are the most likely location for a domestic infestation, but cinemas, hotels, hostels and any other office or rest room environment can also become infested.

An adult bedbug is normally reddish-brown in colour, however this is likely to change to a reddish-purple if they have recently fed. Their body is a flat almond shape at approximately 4 to 6mm in length. Their head is often equipped with antennae and they will have small claws instead of feet. Bedbugs are parasites which means that they will feed off of a living host (often humans) by syphoning blood from them, often whilst they are sleeping.

Bedbugs will commonly live in large groups, which will often lay many eggs where they live. Bedbugs cannot fly and therefore rely on crawling to get around, sometimes they can be found attached to clothing, stowing away in luggage or hiding in corners of second hand furniture.

Bedbug infestations can be difficult to identify in the early stages, however signs will soon begin to show on beds, mattresses, duvets and other fabric items throughout the house.
