Information on Bees

We at Urban Jungle adore bees and their contribution to all life on earth, it is for this reason that we will always try to remove a colony unharmed. Sometimes it may not be possible to remove the colony safely and it is in these rare instances that the nest may have to be treated in accordance with legislation.

There are many bee species in the UK, the main being the honey bee, the bumblebee and the masonry bee. Bees are often confused for wasps, however bees are generally less streamlined and hairier than their wasp counterparts. Bees play an essential role in the pollination of most plant species , because of this they are seldom regarded as pests.

The bees found outside of the hive are commonly the female or ‘worker’ bees. Most of the bee species are very placid and will rarely sting without being provoked. To some however, a sting could even be life threatening, these stings can promote the release of Histamine from the body of an allergic individual, which if untreated, can lead to the body going into Anaphylactic shock.

Swarming is not a common activity for bees, but if you are lucky enough to witness this spectacle, it is important to leave them be as the should move off after a couple of hours. Swarming is the way that new colonies are formed, a new queen bee will leave the original hive whilst leaving a trail of pheromone behind her, half of the workers from the original nest will then swarm around the new queen, until moving off to protect the new queen while they search for a new hive location. Bees do not die off at the end of the season like wasps do, instead they hibernate through the winter before emerging in the warmer months to search for a new hive location.

Do you have an bee problem?

If you believe you may have a bee problem, below is some advice to help you:

  • NEVER attempt to treat a hive yourself – Legislation protects certain bee species and as a result, you could be breaking the law.
  • Most bee species will not sting without being provoked – Do not attempt to swat bees, this could aggravate them
  • Remain still and the bee should move on without stinging
